Siggraph 2000 – Highlights of the Tech Conference

Siggraph 2000 dazzled with immersive virtual environments and talent recruitment, despite a slight decline in attendance from previous years.

The annual computer graphics conference, Siggraph 2000, concludes today in New Orleans, marking the end of a significant week for the tech industry.

Traditionally, this event attracts major film studios, serving as a prime venue for recruiting new animators and talent. However, this year's attendance saw a decline from the previous gathering, which took place in Los Angeles, a location deemed more accessible for attendees.

Despite this, the 27th edition of the conference welcomed around 25,000 participants, who mingled across the vibrant Bourbon Street and engaged with about 300 exhibitors at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

The standout features of the event included immersive virtual environments, showcasing phenomena like oceanic and Martian storms, which were integral to films such as “The Perfect Storm” and “Mission to Mars.” Additionally, synthetic characters, exemplified by “Stuart Little,” captured attention, alongside Linux, which emerged as a notable operating system contender.

Numerous studio presentations, featuring panels and workshops related to the production of films like “The Perfect Storm,” “Stuart Little,” and “Hollow Man,” drew in thousands of eager participants. Don Levy from Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment remarked, “This audience is genuinely interested in the creative process and attends every session.”

Unfortunately, the choice of New Orleans as a venue may have led to a significant drop in student registrations, reportedly by 30%. This decline directly impacted the number of candidates available for positions at prominent visual effects companies such as Industrial Light & Magic, Digital Domain, Manex Visual Effects, Cinesite, and Pacific Data Images/DreamWorks.

This downturn in applicants is notable, especially as the visual effects industry prepares for a particularly busy production schedule ahead. Next year, Sony Pictures Imageworks will focus on projects like “Spider-Man,” “Harry Potter,” and “Stuart Little 2,” while ILM gears up for “Jurassic Park 3,” “A.I.,” “The Mummy 2,” and “Star Wars: Episode II.”This year's tech gathering in Mississippi witnessed a notable decline in hardware manufacturers, with only established players like Sun Microsystems and SGI making their presence felt. In contrast, software innovators such as Alias Wavefront took center stage, showcasing their products compatible with both the internet and Linux.

SGI, after a difficult year that saw significant layoffs due to financial strain, staged an impressive return in the high-end desktop market. They formed a partnership with Intergraph Corp., a former rival in the Windows NT sector.

Graphics Showcase

The Electronic Theater competition stood out this year, featuring a remarkable 107-minute presentation that compiled the finest computer graphics work from the past year. A record 650 entries were submitted, eventually narrowed down to just 39 selections.

Highlighted clips included impressive sequences from industry giants such as ILM, showcasing digital effects from “The Perfect Storm,” and Digital Domain, known for the opening scene of “Fight Club.” Sony Pictures Imageworks contributed with their groundbreaking digital human project from “Hollow Man.”

Other notable works recognized included those from Manex (“The Matrix”), The Secret Lab (“Mission to Mars”), and DreamWorks (“The Road to El Dorado”), reflecting Hollywood's increasing fascination with virtual environments.

The top accolade, Best of Show, was awarded to the PlayStation 2 video game “Onimusha: Warlords,” developed by Links from Japan and set for distribution by Capcom.
